The Right Way to Install a Privacy Fence

An attractive fence can increase the value of your property by as much as $2,000, even if you only use it to protect your yard from wandering neighbors and would-be intruders. If you’re considering putting up a privacy fence but aren’t sure how to go about it, consider this guide on how to install a privacy fence properly. Survey Your Landscape

Before you install your privacy fence, take some time to think about the layout and design. Think about where the fence will go, what size it should be if you want any gates or doors in the fence, and if you need any special materials (such as a wooden privacy screen).

Mark Sides for Placement

Mark the back side of the fence for placement with stakes. You should install your privacy fence on the back side of your property because this is usually where you want privacy most. And it will help with noise, too! If you are installing a black snyggt staket, make sure you mark its location by placing white stakes on the ground

Prep for Construction

First, if you’re installing a black fence, you’ll need to make sure the posts are taller than any other objects in the yard. This will allow them to look more like they belong and not seem out of place. Next, measure your posts and cut the rails so they are at least 8 feet long. Make sure they aren’t too heavy for you or your family members. With that done, take the top rail and put it on one side of the post.

Dig Holes and Installing Posts

Now is the time to put in your posts. If you have already marked where you want them, now’s the time to dig holes for them. The hole should be about twice as deep as the post is high and wide enough for it so that the post will sit flush with the ground. Digging can be tough work, but it’s worth it because you’ll be able to enjoy your fence for years. You may want help from someone else or use a post-hole digger, which makes things easier.

Add Horizontal Braces

Once the posts are set and you’ve nailed your boards in place, it’s time to install horizontal braces.
